DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE

Office Location: Formally was Forodhani in Stone Town and temporarily shifted to Kizimbani Agricultural Research after broken down of the Forodhani Building and in Pembe is located at Weni- Wete diatrict

Date of Creation:     2010, Under Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Zanzibar.

Head: Director of Agriculture as an overall in charge for Zanzibar and in Pemba is in charged under Coordinator of Agriculture Pemba

Overall Mandates of the Department of Agriculture

1. To coordinate all Agriculture related activities and Extension services in Zanzibar.
2. To provide all Agriculture related services to farmers through Extension system.
3. To facilitate the availability of Agro-inputs and Agro-mechanizations.

Section under the Department of Agriculture

a)      Seed Production Unit Bambi

b)      Plant Protection Division (PPD)

c)      Agricultural Extension Section

d)     Tractor workshop

e)      Planning Accountant and Establishment Section

Administration and Leadership: Each section has a head with its mini-Budget allocation within the overall Budget of Agriculture.

Extension Network: There are Regional, District and Shehia level agriculture officers providing services to farmers.

Seed Production: major production of seed grains is done and coordinated at Bambi Seed Unit, in Unguja and Ole in Pemba. The seeds are sold to farmers through Agriculture sub-stations.

The Seed Unit also provides training to farmers on seed production technology.

Pest Control Activities: it is coordinated by Plant Protection Division (PPD). Also PPD provide plant quarantine services.
